Rebirth of the Phoenix

Early Challenges

My cursive writing springs from my love of the smooth flow of the lines it has.

My love of cursive writing began in the first grade because of my English Teacher’s, hatred of me being a left hander. She tried to break me of being a lefty by making me do sheet after sheet of the letters until they looked perfect to her. I swore a silent vow back then, that I would do something with my cursive writing.

Rebirth of the Phoenix

The Artist JOHN WIRE was born in the early years of my sobriety on lower Main St. in a rooming house. I dumpster dived and found loads of wire and started twisting as a form of therapy. Before I joined Base Co-Op Gallery, I hung my creations up in the trees and poles in OTR and around downtown.

At the corner of 8th and Elm stands the Waldo Building that I worked on for 3 ½ years. So, it was only natural for me to spell out Raya Lebanese in SOLID COPPER and hang it 13 feet high on a Sunday morning while I was wearing my painters’ whites.

In the last year, I have hung over 85 medium flowers in trees and poles all over OTR.”

The Process...

The Following is an excerpt from an article featured in issue #4 of XRAY CINCINNATI | April 2001 | “Cityscape Scenery | by Pete Grady | Contributing Writer

“John’s attention to detail and safety concerns are evident not only in his works but also in his installation procedures. All mounting apparatus are tested for structural integrity with old elevator weights.

John’s works are unsolicited gifts to our cityscape. They weren’t sponsored or commissioned by any corporate entity attempting to schmickle the citizenry with tawdry advertising gimmicks marketing itself as a community art project. John’s spontaneous contributions are what help make a community vibrant and alive, one person adding to the character and charm of their neighborhood.”
